Why It’s Important for Celebs to Talk About Mental Health Struggles

For many people, the sense of isolation can be one of the most daunting things about dealing with a mental health condition.

That’s why it can be a relief to discover that other people – including those who are highly successful – have been through their own battles with mental health. Everyone’s individual journey is unique, but mental health issues are relatively common. Knowing that other people have faced similar obstacles can make your own task feel a little less intimidating.

The challenge is to find a way to escape your own bubble and to connect with people who may be able to relate to your experience. Thankfully, many celebrities have been more outspoken about their own struggles with mental health in the past few years. Those high profile examples have broken down some of the stigmas and made it more socially acceptable to ask for help and to discuss personal issues like mental health in public.

That roster of celebrities spans genres and generations and includes everyone from modern icons like Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga to living legends like Julie Andrews and Bruce Springsteen. The breadth of the list is noteworthy because it demonstrates how ubiquitous mental health issues can be. No matter where your interests lie, there’s a good chance that one of your heroes had to overcome a mental health issue at some point on their road to success.

That lets people know that a mental health issue does not need to limit the scope of their ambitions. Popular culture tends to treat famous people as successful people, insofar as they have done their job well enough to gain public recognition for it. However, there is a misconception that those people can’t possibly have mental health problems, which stems from the idea that they could not have accomplished the things they’re famous for – the things that make them remarkable – while dealing with something as mundane as depression.

In truth, mental health issues affect everyone, regardless of fame or social status. Celebrities who are open about living with bipolar disorder and PTSD help change the narrative about what is and is not possible with those (and other) conditions.

Of course, celebrity testimonials are no substitute for the personalized care you’ll receive from a licensed medical professional. If you are struggling with mental health, it’s important to reach out to someone who can help you gain a more complete understanding of your condition and recommend a suitable course of treatment.

It can still be reassuring to know that other people have walked a similar path and that any advice they offer comes from a place of genuine understanding. Mental health is very personal, so no one else will ever fully grasp the depths of your experience. That doesn’t mean you need to face everything alone. There is strength in a community, and it becomes easier to find that support when public figures are willing to speak about their own mental health.
