Occupational Therapist Denied Disability With Crohn’s Diagnosis

Occupational Therapist Denied Disability With Crohn’s Diagnosis

As an occupational therapist, Ken believed in helping others through physical activity and learning to connect with their bodies in new and unique ways. When he was 35, he decided to try and push himself by putting his money where his mouth was and adding to his exercise regime. He started running more and working out more regularly. He started to notice a change in his body and attributed it to the exercise. Unfortunately, there was another reason.

He started to lose weight. Slowly at first, and then progressively more quickly. He noticed more abdominal pain than usual, as well as some cramping, but just assumed it had to be muscle soreness. At first, his friends, family, and coworkers just attributed all of this to the added exercise and as a result, no one thought anything was wrong. Despite feeling uncomfortable with the drastic changes, Ken decided to hold off before starting to worry.

Eventually, he started to experience severe nausea in the middle of the day. These waves often hit him after eating and got bad enough that he’d have to leave work completely. Now Ken was getting concerned. He was convinced something wasn’t right, so he went to the doctor to try and figure out what was going on. Sure enough, his symptoms had nothing to do with the added exercise; he had Crohn’s disease.

The diagnosis stunned him. Ken assumed he knew all there was to know about the human body, but Crohn’s was something new he was not prepared for. He tried to keep working through it but started having to cancel clients. Eventually, he knew he had to take time off work to figure out the extent of his condition, and how to live normally. He applied for disability benefits and was denied.

Factoring the added stress of the denied claim, his Crohn’s flare-ups started coming more regularly. He was almost completely debilitated. One day, an old client came in to see how he was doing. Ken had worked with them before when their own disability claim had been denied and the client recommended he call Share Lawyers.

Thankfully, we were able to help Ken get the benefits he needed. We went through all of the documents he’d sent initially, strengthened his claim by helping gather further documentation, and worked to win the time he needed to learn to live with his condition.

“[Working with Share Lawyers] was great. They always informed me if something new came in and updated me on my case regularly. When I had a question there was always someone there and I was treated with respect.  I was very satisfied. A lot of stress was released. Everybody from Share Lawyers believed in me 100%”.
