Sex Addiction: Resources for Those Who Are Suffering

Sex Addiction: Resources for Those Who Are Suffering

Our culture’s understanding of addiction has changed drastically over the last century – even over the last decade. While discussions surrounding alcoholism and drug addiction have become more mainstream and universally examined, the same can’t be said for all forms of addiction.

Our common conception of sex addiction is far from fully understood. Much like many forms of substance abuse, sex addicts become dependant on the chemical release that occurs during certain sexual encounters. This dependency has the potential to cause extensive damage to their lives and the lives of those they love – and can even be fatal. It is also much more common than most people think. The National Council on Sexual Addiction Compulsivity estimated that 6-8% of North Americans are sex addicts.

When it comes to health, knowledge is power – and if we are to help those affected, then our society has a long way to go in understanding what sex addiction truly is, and the resources available. Those suffering from this condition are dealing with sexual compulsions that are detrimental to their mental wellness. Unhealthy behaviours must be understood and addressed so that new thought patterns and actions can be put in place to live a healthy life. If you or someone you know might be a sex addict, there are incredibly useful tools at your disposal to help the healing process get started.

The SAA website is a good place to check out if you feel any isolation, confusion, or just don’t know where to begin. Have a look at their 12 question quiz, to personally assess whether or not a program or meeting is right for you.  It is also a great resource for friends and family of those struggling – there is a huge range of literature to peruse, and you can also receive up to date news on the topic.

The Psychology Today website is another great resource for those dealing with mental health issues. Here, you can narrow down your criteria to the region where you live, and the situation that you would like to address. For instance, specifically within Ontario, under the Treatment Programs tab, you can narrow down your selection to Sexual Addiction Programs. Here, you can easily browse through information provided by both the Freedom from Addiction treatment centre in Aurora, as well as the EHN Canada Toronto Outpatient Treatment Centre. If treatment centres weren’t what you were looking for, there are plenty of other search functions. A little browsing can lead you to an extensive list of Sexual Addiction Support Groups in Ontario.
