Celebrities with Bipolar Disorder

Celebrities with Bipolar Disorder

As we’ve discussed in several other blogs this month, Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by highs and lows in mood and behaviour. Many of our clients suffer from invisible disabilities, including Bipolar disorder, and we have been able to help them fight the insurance company for the benefits that they deserve.

Bipolar and other mental health disorders still receive a lot of social stigma – there is a lot of misinformation about these conditions, and assumptions are made by people who do not fully understand the ramifications of a diagnosis. Because of this we believe it’s incredibly important to discuss Bipolar Disorder, and to highlight the amazing accomplishments of celebrities who go the extra mile while managing their symptoms.

Demi Lovato

Diagnosed with bipolar after entering an inpatient treatment facility, Demi has become an outspoken advocate of those suffering from bipolar. “Getting a diagnosis was kind of a relief,” she has stated. “It helped me start to make sense of the harmful things I was doing to cope with what I was experiencing.”

Many with Bipolar disorder have symptoms that go unrecognized or are misdiagnosed as depression. For Demi and many others, a diagnosis is a positive first step to finding the right kind of treatment and to find the help needed to live a normal life.

Carrie Fisher

The late Carrie Fisher is perhaps the most well-known celebrity to openly manage the symptoms of Bipolar. For years, Carrie dealt with mental health and substance abuse issues, while in her later years speaking out about Bipolar and its affect on those who have it. While she was diagnosed at 24 years old, it took Carrie almost 4 years to accept her diagnosis, and even more to seek treatment for the challenges she was beginning to accept.

When Carrie died of cardiac arrest at the end of 2016, many saw her untimely passing as a confluence of factors stemming from a life of drug abuse. However, Carrie never stayed quiet about her experiences with Bipolar, and because of that raised awareness and inspired many to keep fighting.

“Think of [your diagnosis] as an opportunity to be heroic,” she said in an interview, “an emotional survival. An opportunity to be a good example to others who might share our disorder.”

It is important to remember that many who seek treatment for Bipolar disorder live normal and even amazingly accomplished lives. A mental disorder does not overtake who a person is, though it can cloud judgment and behaviour. In celebrating the accomplishments of some of today’s major celebs, we hope we have encouraged you to think about this disorder in a different way.
