Why People with a Chronic Illness or Disability May Decide To Have Weight Loss Surgery

Although it’s carried a negative stigma in the past, there are actually many health-related problems for which many people seek weight-loss surgery. Some examples as noted by Dr. Nicole Fearing on Sharecare:

Diabetes, High-blood Pressure, Fatty Liver, High Cholesterol, Heart Disease, Joint and Back Pain, Acid Reflux, Asthma, Blood Clots, Infertility, Cancer, Early Death.

The fact is, many people who undergo weight-loss surgery have usually tried a number of other methods, traditional and untraditional before considering a surgery. The four common types of weight-loss surgery are:

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in which the surgeon limits the amount of food and drink one can consume at a time to a small pouch created at the top of the stomach. In this method, one consumes fewer nutrients and calories.
  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding in which an inflatable balloon is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a very narrow opening into the stomach. This reduces the amount of food that your stomach can hold but not the nutrients and calories, making you feel full sooner.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy  in which part of the stomach is physically separated and removed from the body reducing the amount of food it can hold. This method however does not reduce the absorption of nutrients and calories in the intestines.
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch in which the digestive system is altered so that food bypasses most of the small intestine. This limits the absorption of nutrients and calories and ultimately reduces to weight loss.
