Movember: Its History and Impact

Movember: Its History and Impact

nov 17

It’s November, and for many men that means one thing: time to grow a moustache! If you’re unfamiliar with this tradition and what it symbolizes, let us introduce you to a worthy and meaningful cause: Movember.

Men sport moustaches in November to support and raise awareness of prostate cancer and other health-related issues, as well as encourage men to undergo regular cancer screenings. The Movember Foundation was officially founded in 2004, but Movember-related events pre-date the foundation.

Movember chapters exist worldwide, including the U.S., Australia, South Africa and Canada. Here in Toronto, Movember has become increasingly popular, with men sporting moustaches and numerous events that raise money and support the cause.

The popularity of Movember should come as no surprise, as prostate cancer affects one in eight Canadian men, and is currently the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men. While these statistics are grim, the death rate is on the decline, due in large part to awareness campaigns such as Movember.

Have you or someone you know been affected by prostate cancer? We encourage you to get involved in this worthy cause, either by growing out a moustache of your own, attending an event or spreading the word. Happy Movember!
