Maritime Life

In 1922, The Maritime Life Assurance Company was incorporated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1969, John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston acquired The Maritime Life Assurance Company. The company continued as The Maritime Life Assurance Company. In 2000, The Maritime Life Assurance Company amalgamated with Aetna Life Insurance Company of Canada. The company continued as The Maritime Life Assurance Company. In 2001, The Maritime Life Assurance Company acquired Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada and amalgamated the following year. In 2004, Manulife Financial Corporation acquired John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., including its Canadian subsidiary The Maritime Life Assurance Company. The Maritime Life Assurance Company transferred its business to MFC Insurance Company Limited, which amalgamated with The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company.
