In the early 2000s, renewed growth was spurred by a shift in the focus of its business. Whereas it once generalized in life insurance, the company specialized in health insurance by positioning itself as a niche player in the living benefits market. La Survivance, now operating as LS Mutual in English, broke new ground with regard to its health, critical illness, individual disability and, more recently, travel insurance products. It successfully developed a concept of full or partial refund of the premiums paid by policyowners. LS Mutual has since had a workforce of nearly 200 permanent employees, and it enjoys the support of some 2,300 distributors both in and outside Quebec.
At the celebration to mark its 75th birthday, LS Mutual of Saint-Hyacinthe announced its decision to change its name from “LS Mutual Life Insurance Company” to “Humania Assurance Inc.”
